So long, frozen pizza: Trans fat in foods may eventually become a thing of the past.

The Food and Drug Administration on Thursday took a first step toward potentially eliminating most trans fat from the food supply, saying it has made a preliminary determination that a major source of trans fats - partially hydrogenated oils - is no longer "generally recognized as safe."

If the preliminary determination is finalized, according to the FDA, then partially hydrogenated oils will become food additives that could not be used in food without approval. Foods with unapproved additives cannot legally be sold.

Big Brother will hopefully turn into healthy brother if this works out. I would be grateful if trans fats could be phased out of widespread daily consumption, if only because that would hopefully guarantee a much better range of health(ier) options that are actually accessible to the average person. But by all means cook with trans fats at home & enjoy, it is your right!

Is this a sign of government getting too big? Trans fats have been deemed safe and used for decades. Shouldn't it be my choice if I want to die from complications from over indulgences of food and alcohol or artificial sweetners or red dye #9 or trans fat?

Crisco is a perfect example of a hydrogenated trans fat. Just how is one supposed to make a biscuit, corn bread, fry chicken? Pity the pie crust without a good trans fat. Pork and beef lard are practically impossible to find. What is going to happen to the margarine industry?

It's time to kick Big Brother out of the kitchen and get him back to controlling more important matters like whether or not we can have back our freedom to go topless in national parks and public beaches.

In my opinion, this is a wonderful thing. Trans fats have snuck into absolutely everything. Even with personal responsibility, they are terribly hard to avoid. It's high time to have this eliminated.
